Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot would like to answer the above questions so that our customers have a good idea in mind about braces and to help prevent some confusion.
1. How often will I need to see the orthodontist during treatment?
It’s recommended that you should see your orthodontist every 4-6 weeks. During the treatment, the pressure is continuous and light so regular check ups are necessary to see if the teeth are moving toward the desired direction. If the teeth are moving in the wrong direction, then the orthodontist would choose to tighten or loosen up the wires, springs, or rubber bands that attached to your braces. In some severe cases, the position of the jaw is not best for the teeth, therefore, wearing elastics or a functional appliance along with braces throughout the day or when you are at home is recommended. They could be worn during the evening and night. Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot will give you the best advice on what to do.
2. How long will I have to wear braces?
The length of braces on the teeth depends on each individual and the complexity of their case. Things that need to be in consideration are the severity of the case, the distance the teeth must travel, the health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone, the amount of room available, and how carefully the patient is in following the instructions. The length of braces is generally within 1 to 2 years. That is not enough, they also need to wear retainers to secure the teeth position after braces are removed during the first 6 months. After that, the retainer can be worn at night only. Again, it depends on the severity of the case. Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot is here for you, therefore, no matter how crooked your teeth are, we can fix it.
3. Will braces cause pain ?
Sadly it does, because of the adjustment from the pressure applied on the teeth. We use light wire orthodontics which cause light discomfort too. Your mouth might feel slightly uncomfortable after the regular adjustment. Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot recommends the patient to take medicines such as Mortrin to lessen the pain. We are here to assist our patients, therefore, don’t hesitate to tell us about the pain that you have before, during, and after getting a braces adjusted. Oakland Michigan Othodontist will make sure to keep that in mind and try a different adjustment method to lessen your pain during your next visit.
4. Does the age at which I get braces affect the success of treatment ?
Yes, in term of the length of time braces are on the teeth. In younger people, braces are being worn in a shorter time versus older people. The reason for this is older adults are no longer growing, therefore, we must work with the jaw development that you have. But in term of the success of the treatment, it’s the same despite of the age differences. The benefits of wearing braces are that your teeth become healthier and your smile looks beautiful. Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot recommends our patients get braces at any age.
5. Can I continue to play sports while wearing braces ?
There are no limitations in playing sports when having braces. In a more aggressive sport, Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot recommends our patients to put on a mouthguard to protect themselves from getting hit in the mouth. The mouthguard will fit comfortable in your mouth and its benefit is to protect the teeth and soft tissues from getting damaged.
Oakland Michigan Orthodontist Dr. Kabot wants to educate our patients in ways to have a healthier smile. That is beneficial for them in the long run. We accept all patients despite their age and race differences. So get in touch with us now!
