Avoid hard candy, ice, certs, tic-tacs, ....candy, rock candy, jelly beans, gob-stoppers, caramel, gummy bears, and jaw breakers.
Avoid habits like chewing pens/pencils and biting fingernails.
Chewing gum can double your time in braces (avoid all chewy, thick and sticky candy).
Flossing teeth regularly decreases gum irritation and sensitivity.
Regular dental checkups are essential during orthodontic treatment.
Avoid acid foods such as orange juice, lemonade and tomato sauces for the first 3-4 days with new braces.
Ibuprofen and Advil can be used for discomfort.
Wearing your retainer regularly (depending on the type).
Suggestions for ORTHO Emergencies
Orthodontic wax can be used for poking wires.
Orthodontic wires can be cut with fingernail, toenail clippers and small wire snips.
The eraser on top of a pencil works great for bending a pokey wire away from the cheeks.
Broken braces do not require immediate attention if not causing any discomfort. If all else fails call and schedule to repair it with our doctor.
Care and Use of Expansion Appliance
Worn 24 hrs/day. It can be removed for eating, brushing, and oral hygiene care.
Appliance must be activated every 3 or 4 days depending on your instructions.
Follow the arrows and do not activate before bedtime.
Teeth are generally sensitive for 1/2 to 1 hour after activation.
Appliance must always fit snugly on the teeth otherwise call the office.
Take care of your appliance by brushing it after you brush your teeth.
Newly Banded Patient
Avoid Gum, whole nuts, or corn on the cob.
Avoid Popcorn, large pretzels, hard bread and pizza crust.
Do not chew on steak, chop or chicken bones.
Apples, pears, carrots, and celery sticks should be sliced.
Be careful of olive, cherry, peach, and plum pits.
Peanut butter, Potato chips, Fritos, etc.
Care and Use of Your Retainer
Retainer must be worn full time, 24 hrs/day, for up to 1 year. Remove it only for eating, tooth brushing, or when playing contact sports or swimming. Always wear it when sleeping.
Brush your teeth after each meal and brush your retainer with toothpaste.
Bring your retainer with you to all appointments so it can be checked and adjusted.
Take CARE of your Retainer. If it gets bent, broken, or lost, call to make an appointment. There is a repair and/or replacement fee: $175.00 per replacement retainer $100 Repair retainer.
It is very IMPORTANT for you to keep your retainer in the case we provide and not in your pocket. DO NOT put it on your lunch tray at school or in a restaurant. RETAINERS ALWAYS seem to get LOST at fast food restaurants or school cafeterias.
